Department Profile
The Department of Social Work was established in the year 2003 and it offers Masters Degree in Social Work (M.S.W) with specializations in Human Resources Management and Medical & Psychiatry. Besides theory learning, MSW students also undergo two days of field work training in a week, which reflects the need to learn the practical aspects of their respective field of study. The Department of Social Work, under its multitude of feathers organizes an array of activities that contribute towards enhancing social sensitivity. “Students Participatory Empowerment Forum” (SPEF), is an active Student’s body, under which all the departmental activities are carried out with great passion, zeal and social responsibility.
Specializations
- Human Resources Management
This specialization equips MSW graduates to work as HR Executives/Welfare Officers/HR Managers in public/private/service sectors. Students will be placed for training in industrial organizations to gain practical knowledge in the field. - Medical & Psychiatry
This specialization equips the MSW graduates to work as counselors/social workers in hospitals/psychiatry settings. Students will be placed for training in various settings for an all-round exposure in the field.

1. SEMINAR ONADDRESSING PRIORITY SOCIAL CONCERNS AMONG YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES
REPORT
- The program was commenced at 10:16 am.
- Resource Person was Dr. M. Suresh Kumar, Consultant Psychiatrist & Global Research Director who holds positions on a number of international boards. He has been involved in research and has served as an investigator for several research projects in mental health and substance abuse for over 40 years.
- He addressed various social concerns of youth along with the challenges and its opportunities in topics like Excessive Social Media Use, Substance Use, Stress, Love and Suicide.
- The session was very interesting and interactive. Students shared their feedback like it was relatable and aligning with immense information and lively session.
2. OUTREACH POGRAM ON ANEMIA FREE INDIA OBSERVING NATIONAL NUTRITION WEEK
REPORTS
PG Department of Social Work in Collaboration with ICDS and Outreach Club of SDNBVC organised Outreach Program on Anaemia Free India observing National Nutrition Week. The students of 2nd year MSW were immensely involved in participating in the Street play and Muppet in the motive of creating awareness to the public on Anemia. This was held in Signal junction (in front of Saravana Stores). This program was organized to celebrate the national nutrition week with the year’s theme on ANEMIA.The street play was vibrantly started off with the jingles to grab the attention of the public. Also the Muppetry with the dolls were very attractive to the public. They gradually gave awareness on the symptoms of anemia, food that should be taken and not to be taken to prevent anemia.
3. SPEF INAUGURATION 2022 & SEMINAR ON STRESS MANAGEMENT & COPING WITH PEER PRESSURE OBSERVING WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH
REPORTS :
PG department of Social work has inaugurated Student Association SPEF and organised Seminar on Stress management and coping up with peer pressure in Association withShadithya Hospital, Pallavaram observing World Suicide Prevention Day The program was glorified with the presence of Principal madam and the resource person Mr.K.Jayandra Kumar , Psychiatric Social worker. The program was started at 9:20am with the department song and welcome address. The Principal Madam addressed the students and the program was proceeded with the SPEF FORUM inauguration. The Student participatory Empowerment Forum (SPEF) is an active body under which all our department program are been organised with zeal and enthusiasm. The Elected office bearers of SPEF forum 2022 was given the batch and the inauguration was proceeded with the Oath taking ceremony and concluded with the proposal of SPEF annual report and action plan.
The PG Social Work Students performed street play on Prevention Of suicidal thoughts and behavior. The Resource Person Mr.K. Jayandra Kumar, Psychiatric Social Worker headed the session with his commendable talk on the subject of Stress Management and coping up with peer pressure. The Resource Person discussed about the Symptoms , Preventive measures and tips to deal with stress and some simple relaxation techniques like Deep breathing exercises, Progressive Muscular relaxation technique and so on. The pleasurable activities which helps us to segregate happy hormones via Reading Books, Watching TV, Playing with children were discussed. The session ended up with Feed back questions. The students gave their utmost enthusiastic participation throughout the program and clarified their doubts. The students also exchanged their thoughts and views on coping with peer pressure.
4.OUTREACH POGRAM ON RESILIENCE OF OLDER PERSONS IN CHANGING WORLD COMMEMORATING INTERNATIONAL ELDERLY DAY
REPORTS :
Under SPEF Banner, Staff and Students from PG Department of Social Work organised Outreach Program for Elderly people at Athulya Senior care in order to commemorate International Elderly day. The theme was Resilience Older persons in changing world. The program was hosted by SPEF President and Vice President Ms. Divya and Ms. Vidhya. The program was started with Department song and Welcome Address. After that Staff from MSW felicitated Ms. Muthulakshmi, Senior Nurse. Art based therapy was given by the students to make the elders ventilate their emotions. They were actively involved in the session. First year MSW Students engaged them in Dance and performed dance to make them enjoy. Second year MSW Students performed street play on the concept of showing reverence to older persons. Then recreational activities like games and laughter exercise was also given to them. Elders of Athulya expressed their gratitude and gave very good feedback for organising this program. Certificates were provided to students by Athulya Senior Care.
5.Invited Talk on HR Challenges and Opportunities
REPORTS :
Mr. Yuvaraj Rajendran, Senior Manager from Hexaware Technologies Shared the opportunities and skillsets of human resources. He also briefed about career growth development in global market and shared the knowledge about the resume formatting and drafting. He provided the job portals for job hunting and tips tricks to search the relevant job with relevant keyword. He elaborated on the scope of HR and self entrepreneurship importance. He provided more knowledge on abroad job opportunities for HR. Along with that he also shared the exams that need to be cleared for acquiring HR job opportunities. He shared the recruitment process that is happening in Hexaware Technologies.
6.INVITED TALK ON MEDICAL & PSYCHIATRIC SOCIAL WORKER IN INDIA
REPORTS :
Ms. Yamini Rajagopal, Counsellor and Psychotherapist from SIMS Hospital was the resource person. She initially explained the roles that are available for Medical Social Worker. She explained the skillset for each designation. She also actively provided the skills that suit us would be best scope for an individual. Designations for Medical Social Workers are Patient Coordinator, Transplant Coordinator, Blood bank Coordinator, Liaison Officer and Hospice Coordinator. Ms. Yamini later provided the scope of social worker in psychiatry setting. She explained that scope of social worker in abroad vs India along with the CTC given for each.

Association Activities
State Level Workshop for Sensitizing Teachers on Specific Learning Disability – 09/01/2020
Our students organised Workshop for school teachers on Specific Learning Disability. The main aim of the workshop is to ensure that the classroom teacher’s who plays a vital role will develop appropriate strategies to identify those specially talented kids in the schools. There were about 50 teachers from various esteemed Government and Matriculation schools.
There were three sessions in the workshop. The first session focused on classification of various disability and concept of dyslexia. The session was very interactive with the activities based on the concept. The second session was continued with causes and types of dyslexia under one umbrella. The third session started with warm up activity and focused on identification, treatment or intervention for dyslexia children.
RENAL AWARENESS PROGRAMME
The department organised a RENAL Awareness Programme on 07.09.2018. The Chief Guest for the programme was Ms. Rajalakshmi – Advisory Member – TANKER Foundation. The participants were made aware of the various causes for kidney problems, signs and symptoms for the disease and the food that should be avoided to stay healthy. The participants also signed a Signature Campaign agreeing to spread awareness about the disease.
WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY
The Department observed world mental health day on 13th October 2017. Chief Guest Mr. Eshwar Balasubramaniyan – Head – Outreach Programme AVTAR explained about mental health to PG students from various departments. Our students interacted with other students inside the campus and created awareness about mental health. Also they did a street play on the theme. After which he gave an orientation about Project PUTHRI. Ms. Auxila Christina gave orientation about “One stop centre”, which is a centre for women, affected by any form of violence.
WORLD AIDS DAY -01.12.2018
Organised AIDS awareness programme at Annai sathya Nagar, Near War Memorial, Chennai. Students performed street play and created awareness about AIDS.
Observing International Day for person with Disabilities – 03/12/2018
Organised various competitions for the children in Spastics society of Tamilnadu. The children actively participated in the events. Our students performed dance and puppetry.
Observing World Navy Day -17/12/18
We visited the Navy port and performed mime emphasising the service of navy personnel to the society.
Observing Human Rights Day -7/12/18
Our students performed Mime, Street play and created awareness on child rights. Importance of Child helpline “CHILDLINE 1098” was given by Chief Guest to PSBB Matriculation School at Mangadu.
SPARK – UTOPIA ’19 Intercollegiate Cultural fest – 22/02/19
Our students conducted SPARK – UTOPIA’19 an intercollegiate cultural fest on 22nd February 2019. Students from various colleges across Chennai have enrolled and participated in various on-stage and off-stage events. The event was inaugurated by MR. Naveen Muralidhar, KPY Contestant of Star Vijay. Musically Fame Mr. Vishnu Unnikrishnan gave his August presence in the valedictory session and gave away the prizes to the winners. The overall trophy is won by MCC College – Tambaram.

Rural Camp 2021 – “PUDHUMAI KAANA INAIVOM”

Place: O.M.Mangalam and Sivapuram Village, Sriperambudur Taluk, Kancheepuram District.
40 students (Both 1 and II MSW Students) along with 2 staff members Mrs.Helen Sha Diana., Assistant Professor and Ms.Priyadharshini K, Assistant Professor stayed in the village and created awarness on various topics.
