Office of the Controller of Examinations is responsible for conducting internal and semester examinations, declaration of results, supplementary examinations and revaluation. The office organizes annual graduation proceedings and has a state-of-art technology in providing a holistic environment to the stakeholders.

Examination Regulations

All students must have a minimum 75% attendance for Arts, Science and Commerce courses (Aided and Self Supporting Streams) at UG, PG and M.Phil levels for both Theory and Practical papers.

Attendance requirement for writing end semester examinations (UG, PG, M.Phil).

ATTENDANCE ( from 2020 Batch onwards ).

4 Attendance ≤ 49% and >0 2021,2022,2023 To repeat the programme(by rejoining) for which they lack attendance without proceeding for II/III Year as the case may be. Until they rejoin the programme and earn the required attendance for that particular semester/ year, no students shall be permitted to proceed to the next year/next semester of the programme under any circumstances. They have to obtain prior permission from the University to rejoin the programme.
5 Attendance with 0% 2021,2022,2023 Students who have earned 0% of attendance, have to repeat the programme(by rejoining) without proceeding to succeeding semester and they have to obtain prior permission from the university to rejoin the programme immediately

A candidate who has secured less than 65%of attendance in the final semester has to compensate his/her attendance shortage in a manner as decided by the concerned head of the department after rejoining the same course. Demand draft of Rs.250/- to be drawn in favor of “The Registrar, University of Madras” towards condonation fee.

Arrears /Repeat Examination

a) A student having arrear paper(s) shall have the option to appear along with the regular semester papers.

b) Students who fail in any of the papers in Part I, II, III & IV of UG and Part I & II of PG degree examinations shall complete the paper concerned within N+2 years from the date of admission to the said programme.

Supplementary/Instant Examination

a) Final year students (UG – III year 6th semester and PG – II year 4th semester) with one arrear are eligible to apply for Supplementary / Instant Examination.

b) Supplementary / Instant Examination will not be conducted for practical papers and projects..

Exam Fee

Candidates should pay the exam fees in the month of September for odd semesters and in the month of Febraury for even semesters.

Passing Requirements

1. There shall be no passing minimum for Internal. But zero also should not be awarded. In case a student absents herself for all the CIA exams and ends in getting 0 in internal in a particular subject, she will be awarded 1 or 2 marks for attendance.

2. (a) For all UG programmes except B.Com Honours (Theory/Practical/Project and Part I,II& IV) the passing requirement of courses is as follows:student should secure not less than 40% of marks in End Semester Examination (ESE) and not less than 40% in aggregate of the total internal and external marks. (b) For B.Com.Honours(Theory/Practical/Project and Part I, II& IV)student should secure not less than 50% of marks in EndSemester Examination (ESE) and not less than 50% in aggregate of the total internal and external marks. (c) For all PG programmes(Theory/Practical/Project and Part II) the passing requirement of courses is as follows: student should secure not less than 50% of marks in End Semester Examination (ESE) and not less than 50% in aggregate of the total internal and external marks.

3. A student who passes in all subjects earning minimum of 140 credits for UG programme, 179 credits for B.Com. Honours, 180 credits for B.Voc. Travel and Tourism and 91 credits for all PG programmewithin the maximum period of N+2 years reckoned from the date of admission to the programmeshall be declared to have qualified for the degree.

4. Grading shall be based on overall marks obtained (Internal + External).

EXEMPTION FOR HEARING AND SPEAKING IMPAIRED AND SPECIAL NEED CANDIDATES FROM STUDY AND EXAMINATION

Dyslexia students:For students who are mentally disabled, learning disability and mental retardation, who are slow learners, who are mentally impaired having learning disorder and seizure disorder and students who are spastic and cerebral palsy, the following concessions shall be granted:

  1. a) Part I foundation course Tamil or any other Language can be exempted.
  2. b) One-third of the time of paper may be given as extra time in the examination.
  3. c) Leniency in overlooking spelling mistakes, and
  4. d) Amanuensis for all courses provided the request is duly certified by the Medical Board of the Government Hospital/ General Hospital/District head quarters Hospitals and they shall be declared qualified for the degree if they pass the other examinations prescribed for the degree.

Hearing, Speaking Impaired & mentally retarded: For students who are hearing and speaking impaired and who are mentally challenged ,the following concessions shall be granted :.

  1. i. One Language paper either Part I foundation course Tamil or anyotherLanguageor Part II English or its equivalent can be exempted.
  2. ii. Part IV Non-Major Elective(NME) or Basic Tamil or Advanced Tamil can be exempted.

Visually challenged students:

  1. i. Exempted from paying examination fee.
  2. ii. A Scribe shall be arranged on prior intimation by the COE office in consultation with “Centre for Inclusion and Equal Access”.
Instruction to Students

General Instructions

  1. The End Semester Examination–November/April (descriptive & MCQ sessions)–from Start date – End date (15).
  2. Staff invigilator should report 30mins ahead of the specific exam session Reporting time: 8:30 AM for (9:00AM to11:30AM) Venue: Block Name, Room No. And Seat Number. To Exam Committee- Chief Superintendent
  3. Exam time duration: The Descriptive exam session 2Hrs & 30mins and MCQ–45mins Descriptive Exams–FN session (9.00am to 11.30am) MCQ Exams–ANsessions – 4Slots(12.30pm– 1.15pm;1.30pm– 2.15 pm; 2.30pm–3.15pm&3.30pm–4.15pm)

Special instruction for students

  1. Students should be permitted into the exam venue only with HallTicket & IDCard.
  2. The Student at exam venue without a valid HallTicket & ID Card should be sent to COE Office for temporary Hall Ticket (one time use only)
  3. No student to be permitted into the venue after expiry of 30 mins from the Commencement of examination.
  4. Students should be instructed to bring all the required stationeries (Pens, Pencil, Eraser, Etc., in a clear transparent pouch).
  5. Student mobile devices are not permitted in the exam venue.
  6. Students should report to the allotted MCQ venue ontime in the afternoon.
  7. Students can leave the campusonly after completing both descriptive & MCQ sessions of examination.
Publication of Results

RESULT DECLARATION

  1. The Result Review meeting will be conducted where the Head of the Departments and the second senior will review their department result. Moderation of marks will be requested incase of requirement.
  2. The Result Review statistics will be presented in the Passing Board comprises of three External Subject Experts to pass the results. Once the results are passed by the board, the result published in the college website – within 15 to 20 days from the last date of examinations.

INSTRUCTION REGARDING REVALUATION OF ANSWER SCRIPTS

  1. The student is eligible to apply for revaluation if she secures a minimum 40% of maximum internal marks within the stipulated number of days from the publication of results with the prescribed fee.
  2. The revaluation will be done by an external examiner appointed by the COE office.
  3. Passed out students and students apperaring for arrear codes are not eligible for Revaluation.
Supplementary/Instant Examination
  1. Final year students (UG – III year 6th semester and PG – II year 4th semester) with one arrear are eligible to apply for Supplementary / Instant Examination..
  2. Supplementary / Instant Examination will not be conducted for practical papers and projects.
Marksheet / Degree Certificate
  1. Marks sheets of the respective semesters and Consolidated mark sheet (for final year students only) of successfully completed students are given through the departments.
  2. Mark sheet and Consolidated marks sheet are printed with sixteen security features.
  3. Provisionally qualified students database is uploaded through online entry in the University of Madras website in the month of July.
  4. The University of Madras issues provisional and degree certificates.
  5. Mark sheets, consolidated mark statement and Provisional certificates are dispersed to the students by the department faculty
  6. Degree certificates and Rank Certificates are given at the time of convocation.

ISSUE OF DUPLICATE MARK STATEMENTS, CONSOLIDATED MARK SHEETS IN CASE OF LOSS OF THE SAME.

The requisition letter by the student towards issue of Duplicate Mark statement and consolidated mark sheet should be accompanied by the following:

  1. A police certificate (FIR).
  2. Fee for duplicate mark sheets.
