ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Post Graduate department of English was started in the year 2013 with the purpose of furthering the higher education of women students and to channelize their thoughts in the fields of research. The programme aims to familiarize the students to the various aspects of literature, its genres, literary schools, movements, authors, cultures and ideologies. The course intends to groom the students to become well rounded individuals and empowered personalities in the society and to train them to have a critical and inclusive thought towards life as revealed through literature.

The faculty members of the department are substantively qualified, dedicated to sharing their expertise in their areas of specialization and systematically advance themselves by participating and conducting seminars, conferences and workshops, presenting papers and publishing articles. Additionally, the department frequently invites experienced scholars and subject experts to deliver guest lectures for the enrichment of the students.

The present syllabus familiarizes the students to the various aspects of literature such as genres, literary schools, movements, authors, cultures and philosophies and, furthermore, creates an awareness of the politics of language and discourse to critically understand literature and culture studies. Every three years, the syllabus for the course is upgraded and revised by the department with the guidance of accomplished and experienced academicians as well as industry experts so that the students achieve cognizance of contemporary literary trends, theories and ideologies, also. Contemporary special papers like Women’s Writings, Myths and their Modern Retellings, New Literatures, Regional Literatures in Translation, Popular Culture Studies, Literature of the Marginalised and Film Studies and Literature are included to expose the students to all forms of expressions and narratives that record the subaltern and marginalised voices. Such a strong syllabus helps students to crack competitive exams like NET and SET as well as help them channelize their career choices in the relevant fields of their interest. As part of co-curriculum, the department organizes seminars and competitions regularly and encourages the students to participate in inter-collegiate events and competitions.

The course also intends to bring out employable graduates not only in the field of teaching but also to equip them to cater to the demands of business processes. So the students have a spectrum of job opportunities as content writers, copy editors, freelancers, translators, journalists, entrepreneurs etc.

The students are a flourishing community bringing laurels to the department by winning prizes and awards in various competitions, conferences and theatre events. Thanks to the annual extensive campus interviews organised by the college, many of the students of the department get placements in educational institutions, publishing houses, media and advertising agencies and in corporate offices even before receiving the degree. Many students further their academic knowledge by pursuing research and higher education.
