BREASTFEEDING WEEK CELEBRATION – 02/08/2022 – Women’s Health Talk & MOU Signing ceremony

August 2: On the occasion of World Breastfeeding week celebration, the PG Department of Home Science – Food Science Nutrition & Dietetics, Shrimathi Devkunvar Nanalal Bhatt Vaishnav College for Women, conducted programs such as ‘Women’s health in millennia’ and ‘Women’s health issues: Diet & ways of coping’. World Breastfeeding week is an annual celebration which is held every year from August 1 – 7, to generate public awareness and support for breastfeeding. The resource persons of the program were Dr. RS. Kiruthiga Devi M.B.B.S., D.G.O., and Ms. Vijayashree. N. M.Sc., M.Phil., RD. There were two sessions in the program, the first session was focused on the ways of improving women’s health and the second session was aimed at the diet and ways of coping’ for the health.

Two MoU’s (Memorandum of Understanding) were signed with Vaayusastra Aerospace Pvt. Ltd, Incubated under IIT Madras, Chennai, and Parvathy Hospital, Chennai.

The inaugural address was presented by Mr. Krishnamoorthy, M.Sc., M.H.Sc., PGDAND., RD.  Along with students, 8 ICDS workers (Integrated Child Development Scheme) were also educated through this program.

  • To develop experts in Nutrition, practice a wide range of perspectives within the health system, from disease prevention to palliation.
  • To Acquire skills to undertake systematic research in the area of Food Science and Nutrition to develop newer food formulas in prevention and treatment of lifestyle diseases.
  • To empower womento actively participate at national and international levels and contribute to the food and nutrition security, health of the citizens and to improve well-being and quality of life.

History of the Department

The Department of MSc Home Science – Food Science Nutrition and Dietetics was established in the year 2018 with the motto of empowering our students to be influential leaders in the industry of Nutrition Dietetics and Food Science. This is the pioneering department to offer this postgraduate degree under Madras University. The primary objective of this course is to integrate theoretical knowledge and its practical application in the fields of Food Science and Nutritional Science.  The course provides practical skills for entrepreneurship, researcher and careers in various fields like health educators, Dietician, personal trainers, public health planners, diabetic educator, food scientist and more.

The faculty strives to provide highest quality educational experience for students by exposing them to current research in the field of Nutrition. The faculty members of the department are actively involved in community activity, research and publication.

The department and its students are regularly organizing or taking part in a variety of extension activities – a highly commendable feature. students continued to enjoy high levels of success across the four cornerstones academic, cultural, sport and leadership through service. They have many successes in a wide range of regional, national and international competitions. 

Passed out students are working as Dietitians in well-known hospitals and health care sectors in and around Chennai, some are successful entrepreneurs in the field of food products with FSSAI license and some are working in colleges and other educational institutes. 

Facilities offered to students

The department has well ventilated and spacious classrooms providing spacious class rooms providing comfortable learning environment for students. Every classroom has an LCD projector and the college provides free Wi-Fi connection to all students to attend online courses and conference. The Department has Analytical techniques, Physiology, Microbiology and Food science Lab. The Labs are well equipped with latest gadgets. The Food lab provides training to students on Food Service Management, Quality Food Production, Quality control of food besides orienting them to different global as well as native cuisines. The Analytical lab has latest instrumentation facilities enables students to undertake qualitative and quantitative analysis of macro and micro nutrients. Students are encouraged towards research to the upliftment of the Society. The fund is given by the college management for conducting research projects and for publication in UGC Care listed and Scopus Journal.

About the syllabi

The syllabi are framed as Outcome based education (OBE) which is student – centric teaching and learning methodology in which the course delivery, assessment are planned to achieve stated objectives and outcomes. It focusses on measuring student performance that is outcomes in different levels. The curriculum brings about an interesting mix of career-oriented papers like public health Nutrition, Sports nutrition, Food processing, Food product development, Nutritional research methodology, Instrumentation and Diet therapy. Every year the syllabus will be reviewed by industrialist, academicians and alumni to update the syllabus in par with the present current educational scenario.
